Dietary Isoflavones and Healthy Microbiome May Protect Against Multiple Sclerosis

Dietary Isflavones

Isoflavones are phytoestrogens that can be found in soy and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Researchers found that animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS) on an isoflavone-free diet had a gut microbiome similar to that in MS patients, and lacked gut bacteria that could break down isoflavones.

But animal models of MS on an isoflavone diet had a gut microbiome similar to that in healthy people, and included isoflavone-metabolizing gut bacteria. When the gut bacteria break down isoflavones, they produce a substance called equol, which confers disease protection.

Our diet can affect our memory! Research shows that people who consume more foods with antioxidant flavonols, such as by eating more fruits and vegetables or drinking more tea, may have a slower rate of memory decline. Flavonols, a type of phytochemical found in plants, are known for their beneficial effects on health. Just 15 mg a day, or about one cup of dark leafy greens, can make a difference!

When the body breaks down purine, it produces uric acid, which can build up in the blood and may lead to gout. Avoid high purine-content foods, such as liver, kidney, and shellfish.

Soybeans contain only a moderate amount of purine, much less than the purine-content in animal-based foods. A study by the National University of Singapore found that eating soy products like tofu did not increase uric acid levels.
