Health: Prevention of Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases are a class of diseases caused by the immune system attacking the body’s own tissues. Excessive consumption of meat and dairy products is considered to possibly increase the risk of developing autoimmune diseases, and the main mechanisms involved are as follows:

🥩 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆
Meat and dairy products contain molecules that are similar to certain tissues in the human body, such as lactose and myoglobin found in beef. When these molecules enter the body, the immune system may mistakenly recognize them as part of the body’s own tissues and attack them, leading to an autoimmune reaction

🥩 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Components found in meat and dairy products, such as saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, are believed to induce inflammatory reactions in the body. Chronic inflammation can potentially lead to autoimmune diseases.

🥩 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗮
Certain components found in meat and dairy products may affect the balance of gut microbiota, resulting in immune system dysregulation and potentially triggering autoimmune reactions.

In conclusion, although these mechanisms are still under research, current evidence suggests that consuming meat and dairy products may increase the risk of developing autoimmune diseases. Therefore, it is recommended for people to moderately consume meat and dairy products in their diet and to include plant-based foods that are rich in dietary fiber, plant proteins, and probiotics to maintain a balanced diet.

Recently, the number of cases of autoimmune diseases has increased. As per the name, the autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system of your own body fights back with itself.

The normal function of your immune system is to fight against foreign substances, by sending out cells to fight them. It sounds peculiar that your own body would want to fight against itself, especially since your body can already function on its own.

Examples of diseases include rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid diseases. Scientists still do not know the exact cause of why an autoimmune disease occurs but there is an ongoing theory where certain infections could affect the regulation of the immune system.

There are a variety of ways to lower the chances of you getting an autoimmune disease:

🌿 Eat a whole food diet – there have been studies that shown certain wholefoods can relieve the symptoms of the autoimmune disease. These include antioxidant foods (berries and kale – cruciferous vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (fish and chia seeds). These foods can help to reduce inflammation as there are different types of bacteria levels depending on the food consumed.

🌿 Start incorporating healthy habits – low impact activities (walking, cycling, swimming), proper rest, reduce the consumption of alcohol and smoking. The small habits will compound and have big changes later on. Many people tend to underestimate the small habits and want to make drastic changes in their lives immediately, but it’s usually not sustainable.

Sadly, it’s not possible to avoid getting an autoimmune disease altogether, and even though it’s sad that these diseases are getting more common, there are many ways to combat it, from medications, lifestyle changes and food recommendations. Remember to take care of your health!
