Coconut oil is about 90% saturated fat—more than butter, or even lard. A diet high in saturated fats increases the risk of heart disease by increasing “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. Coconut oil is not at all the health food people mistakenly believe. According to the American Heart Association, coconut oil is detrimental to heart health.

The Effect of Coconut Oil Consumption on Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of the effect of coconut oil consumption on blood lipids and other cardiovascular risk factors compared with other cooking oils using data from clinical trials.
