Artificial Sweeteners Distrupt Communication Among Gut Bacteria

Research published in the 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑆𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠 has found that common artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin, aspartame, and sucralose, may cause a breakdown in communication among gut bacteria and disrupt the healthy balance. This can increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, digestive issues, and other health problems.

Artificial Sweeteners Are Not Good For You

Artificial Sweeteners Are Not Good For You

Although diet drinks and foods may have fewer calories, they are not the healthier choice. A study published in the 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 found that those who did not drink any diet drinks had a 20 – 30% lower risk of heart disease than those who did. In another study, researchers from the University of Queensland have found that artificial sweeteners may accelerate the problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Artificially Sweetened Beverages Linked to Higher Risk of Heart Disease

Artificially Sweetened Beverages Linked to Higher Risk of Heart Disease

Artificially sweetened beverages are not a healthy substitute for sugary drinks. Research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows artificially sweetened drinks are associated with a higher risk of heart disease. Scientists studied more than 100,000 participants and found that, compared to non-consumers, higher consumers of artificially sweetened drinks had higher risks of heart disease.
