Our gut microbiome has an impact on our sleep! The gut microbiome produces metabolites that are involved in the production of neurotransmitters that help sleep, such as serotonin. Researchers depleted mice of intestinal microorganisms using antibiotics and found that the mice without a healthy gut microbiome did not sleep as well as the normal mice. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome with plenty of dietary fiber has the potential to help those who have trouble sleeping.

Gut Microbiota Affects Brain Function and Mood
Recent research shows a link between mood disorders and damage to the gut microbiota. Researchers have discovered that chronic stress causes harmful changes in the gut microbiota, resulting in depressive-like behaviors. Simply transferring the microbiota from an animal with mood disorders to a healthy animal was enough to cause depressive-like behaviors in the latter. Keeping the gut microbiota healthy could be a promising method for alleviating depressive-like behaviors.

A healthy gut microbiome is important for overall health. A study done by the University of California, Riverside has suggested that unhealthy childhood diets can alter the gut microbiome with a lasting influence into adulthood. An unhealthy and unbalanced microbiome can lead to the body being more susceptible to disease. Good health starts from childhood. As one of the researchers stated, “You are not only what you eat, but what you ate as a child!”
