A recent study conducted by researchers from Imperial College London and the University of Copenhagen has found that high levels of plasma caffeine (circulating caffeine in the blood) over a long time may help protect against obesity and joint disease. The study confirmed prior evidence of a protective effect of plasma caffeine on obesity risk, and found that long-term increases in circulating caffeine may lower body weight and reduce the risk of osteoarthritis.

An Espresso a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
The aggregation of tau protein is thought to play a crucial role in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. A study conducted by researchers at University of Verona in Italy explored espresso compounds such as caffeine, trigonelline, genistein, and theobromine to determine their impact on tau protein aggregation. The experiments showed that the espresso extract, as well as caffeine and genistein individually, prevented tau protein aggregation. Although further research is needed, these findings may open up possibilities for developing bioactive compounds that could help protect the brain.

Plenty of foods and drinks contain caffeine, some of which might surprise you. This may include chocolate, ice cream (coffee and mocha flavored), cereal (cocoa flavored), cookies, hot chocolate powder, cocoa powder, energy drinks, and sodas.
Even if you choose decaffeinated coffee or decaffeinated tea, take note that it may still contain caffeine but in very small quantities. Shunning all foods and drinks that contain caffeine may be a bit misguided. Instead of judging food by one component, we need to look at it as a whole.
If you can tolerate or enjoy the effects of caffeine, then there is no need to avoid it! In fact, drinks such as coffee and tea not only taste great, they can benefit your health too! Coffee and tea both bring tons of health benefits, so there is no need to avoid them just because of caffeine.
