The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidance saying that non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) should not be used for weight loss as there is no evidence they can help control body fat. The WHO also noted “potential undesirable effects” from the long-term use of NSS, including a mildly increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart diseases.

A recent study reveals that sucralose-6-acetate—a chemical formed when digesting the artificial sweetener sucralose—is genotoxic (damages DNA).
The findings suggest that the amount of sucralose-6-acetate in a single daily sucralose-sweetened drink may far exceed the European Food Safety Authority’s threshold for genotoxic substances.
